Charminar, (Four Minarets) historic memorial located in Hyderabad, west-central Telangana state, south-central India.

The monument was constructed in the year 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. He was the fifth king of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty. Over the years, it has become a trademark monument and an iconic representation of the city’s heritage. According to one inscription, Hyderabad was staggering from a devastating plague at the time that Muḥammad Quli Quṭb Shah was shifting his capital from nearby Golconda to the new city. He celebrated the end of the plague by constructing a mosque, which is known as Charminar. It formed the center around which Hyderabad was proposed.

Charminar is considered as one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Qutb Shahi period. It is built with granite and limestone powder with plaster ornamentation. This structure measures 66 feet to a side and has a pointed arch with a 36 feet base and 66 feet high at its top. A column rises on each corner of the structure with a lotus-leaf base. It continues upwards until it ends in a minaret with a dome-shaped roof, which is 160 feet above the ground. Each minaret is accessed by a spiral staircase on its interior wall, each of which is connected by a walkway with a railing around. Above the arches of the main structure has two legends. The first was once used as an Islamic college in the Quṭb Shahi era, and the second as a small mosque. The Charminar’s roof and minarets provide panoramic views of Hyderabad.
